Roommate Genius, Inc. ("Roommate Genius," "we," "us," or "our") respects your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights.
ACCOUNT INFORMATION: Name, email, phone number, university (for students), and date of birth. If you choose or are asked to complete verification, we also collect the documents you upload, such as a government ID, selfie, student record, or income document. Verification files are stored in private storage and made available to authorized reviewers through time-limited access links.
PROFILE INFORMATION: Lifestyle preferences, hobbies, neighborhood preferences, pet status, smoking and drinking habits, and free-text descriptions you choose to provide.
OPTIONAL INFORMATION: Pronouns, self-described gender, dietary notes, and other voluntary disclosures. You are never required to provide any of this to use the Service.
PAYMENT INFORMATION: Processed by Stripe. We do not store full credit card numbers.
BACKGROUND CHECK INFORMATION: If you authorize a background check when that feature is available, a third-party screening provider processes the report. We limit the status and report information we receive and use it only for the authorized purpose, subject to applicable law.
USAGE DATA: IP address, browser type, device information, pages viewed, actions taken, and similar analytics data.
To provide the matching service and surface compatible roommates. To verify your identity and prevent fraud. To process payments. To send service-related communications. To improve and develop the Service. To comply with legal obligations.
We do NOT sell your personal information. We do NOT share your free-text profile content (about_me, roommate_preferences_open) with landlords. We do NOT share protected-class data (pronouns, self-described gender, religion, national origin) with landlords or any third party except as required by law. We do NOT run any algorithm that infers your race, religion, or national origin from your data.
We share information with: matched users (the limited profile fields shown in the matching experience, not your email address or private verification files); service providers that host the Service, store private files, process payments, deliver communications, provide analytics, or perform an authorized screening; landlords or property teams only when you use a relevant housing feature or authorize sharing; and legal authorities when required by law or necessary to protect rights and safety.
We retain account and profile data while your account is active and as needed to operate the Service. Verification documents are retained only as long as reasonably needed for review, fraud prevention, dispute handling, and legal obligations. When you request deletion, we delete or deidentify eligible data, while retaining records required for legal, security, payment, or dispute purposes.
You may request access, correction, deletion, or a portable copy of eligible personal data by emailing info@roommategenius.com. You may also correct profile information in the Service and opt out of marketing emails using the unsubscribe link. Depending on where you live and applicable law, you may have additional privacy rights and a right to appeal a denied request.
We use safeguards designed to protect personal information, including encrypted transport, role-based access controls, private storage for verification files, and time-limited links for authorized document review. No system is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
The Service is not directed to anyone under 18. We do not knowingly collect data from minors. If we learn we have collected data from a minor, we will delete it.
We may update this Privacy Policy. Material changes will be communicated by email or in-app notice.
