Fair Housing Notice

Last Updated: May 14, 2026

Roommate Genius is committed to fair housing for all.

The federal Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination in housing on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, familial status, national origin, and disability. The Texas Fair Housing Act provides parallel state protections.

While federal courts have held that the selection of a roommate within a shared dwelling falls outside the Fair Housing Act's scope due to privacy and intimate association rights (Fair Housing Council v. Roommates.com, 666 F.3d 1216, 9th Cir. 2012), Roommate Genius designs its matching platform around lifestyle compatibility — sleep schedule, cleanliness, hobbies, pet preferences — rather than protected characteristics.

Our apartment listings and landlord-facing services strictly comply with the Fair Housing Act and the Texas Fair Housing Act. We do not allow landlords to filter, screen, or reject tenants based on protected characteristics.

What this means for you

  • You can share preferences about your ideal roommate freely. These are your personal preferences, not requests for the platform to discriminate on your behalf.
  • The platform's matching algorithm does NOT filter or rank based on race, color, religion, national origin, familial status, or disability.
  • "Prefer not to say" is available on every sensitive field. You are never required to disclose protected information.
  • Landlords on our platform never see your free-text profile content, your pronouns, your self-described gender, or any other protected-class-adjacent information you may have shared in your roommate profile.

Report discrimination

By using Roommate Genius, you acknowledge this notice and agree to use the Service in compliance with all applicable fair housing laws.
